Nanny Background Check – A Very Dangerous Situation
Why even bother with a nanny background check?
You have children that you love very much. And they love and trust you to take care of them.
You work every day and need that money to help support your family. The kids are still too young to go to school; or there are a few hours from the end of their school day until you arrive home. You have to find some form of supervision to help; whether it's a babysitter or a nanny to help in this area and many others. So should you do a nanny background check?
You have to find them a nanny to take care of them while you are not at home. With all of the videos of people hitting our kids and abusing them; with all of the crime in the world; with thieves posing as caregivers just to get into your home to rob you; you can't afford NOT to do a nanny background check. It is absolutely the only way to totally ensure that your children are safe when you are not there.
So why is this a dangerous situation?
The reason this is all very dangerous, is because of what I've seen over and over again.
You put an ad in the newspaper or online. Several people respond and most of them are just lovely people. Their references seem to be in order and you like their personalities. And the kids seemed to have liked them very much.
Why is this dangerous?
Because if you're convinced by their demeanor, resume and appearance that they are the perfect one for you, then you will overlook this vital step and you won't get a nanny background check done!
Okay, okay…you’ve convinced me. Now what do I do?
Before doing a nanny background check, you want to make sure that you have the person's exact and legal first and last name. Make sure you get their legal name off of a document such as a license or passport that shows their photo along with their full name. And let them know that you are going to do a nanny background check. That may be enough to send them running and then you won't have to do anything at all.
Of course, the best thing to do is to have your prospective employee sign a release form to do a nanny background check. As I said previously, if the person has a checkered background which will show up on the nanny background check, then they will tell you they want to look over the release form and they will sign it and get it back to you. More than likely you'll never get the release form back. Obviously, you already have an answer to that person's background.
What information will a nanny background check give me?
A nanny background check will reveal the complete character of the person which is exactly what you want. It will reveal if they ever were convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony in the past seven years.
It will show you a complete criminal background, civil court lawsuits, education and medical records and anything else that would be important to you will be covered in a nanny background check.
Also, when you run a nanny background check you will discover if they are telling the truth about past nanny employment and personal references. And you will want to take special notice of the person's motor vehicle record. After all, they will be driving your precious child/children around. And of course, you will then get information from the National Sex Offender Registry. This part of the search will alert you to whether or not this person that you are considering hiring has ever been convicted of sex offenses.
